The Routemaster Bus

The famous red Routemaster London bus is an example of how a simple piece of classic transport design can become a symbol not just of London, but of the whole country. It is instantly recognisable to people all over the world who will immediately think of our foggy, rain-sodden land when they see a picture of this now demised bus.

The British have a habit of ridiculing their public transport systems and you can bet that waiting for a Routemaster on a cold January morning was no less frustrating than it is waiting for one of its modern equivalents. Yet the sight of one of these chugging round the corner was probably enough to warm the soul, if not the body, especially as the cheery 'ding, ding' of the cord operated bell sent it on its way again.

Were you a conductor or driver of one of these buses - there must be lots of stories to be told here. We'd love you to post them on our forum and help us re-live the days when the Rouemaster ruled the streets of London.
