Why?

The object of Disappearing Britain is not to lament or to celebrate but to remember things that have had a long tradition, history or hold on these islands, some for the better, some not. We are not against multi-culturalism, change or progress and indeed welcome anything which enriches and enlivens; we have no wish to wallow in rose-tinted pasts that bear little relation to reality. We do wish to laugh at, cry over and reflect upon things that have helped to define Britain over decades or even centuries and perhaps create our own small repository of such things before they begin to disappear from the collective memory.

We’re starting off this website with some of our ideas of disappearing Britain, but we want your ideas to help it grow and hopefully become a useful resource. We also want your stories, photos, records of anything you think we might be able to put on the site. Just them to us and if they fit the bill we’ll put them here.

Navigation

To the left you'll see a selection of things that feature on the site, but at the top of each page you'll see five categories which will contain the full listings as they develop. Arts will obviously include things such as music, dance and literature; Architecture will feature anything from cottages to castles; Commerce will cover money, shops, pubs, and business related items; Culture will feature such things as language, customs, dress and traditions; Environment will include wildlife, the countryside, the coasts and perhaps even the weather.

Forum

We will also be publishing a forum for you to post your comments on a range of subjects covered on this site. You can read the comments posted so far and add your own here.
